AF2002 A kasangala Figure (Lega/Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa)

A rare figure called kasangala used in the initiation rites of the Lega Bwami society. It portrays an arbiter of community problems. The raised arm points to the sky as a measure of the magnitude of problems solved. The associated saying is “I have arbitrated something big”. Wood, traces of kaolin. On metal stand.
